The Werewolves

Lycanthropy is considered a gift, sometimes being called ‘The Gift’.  It is passed on genetically or through the bite – though to be passed through the bite, the wolf biting must make an effort of will, a choice, as well as a mixing of the blood (accomplished by biting the inside of the cheek) in order to empower the bite to carry the gift.  A werewolf will not Gift a Vampire, nor will a Vampire Turn a werewolf.  What is created when that happens is called a skinwalker, and is as close to true evil as can be seen.

The Stages of Lycanthropy

Pup

A pup can only shift between wolf form and human form, and they can only do it when the full moon is out.

Wolf

A wolf has enough control of ‘the call’ that they can ignore the full moon, choosing instead to shift to wolf form anytime they are in the dark, out of sunlight.

Shifter

A shifter has learned, through meditation, age, and practice, to control the call, letting it loose anytime they so choose – be it day or night.

Elder

Elders have almost perfected their control of the call.  At will they can shift major muscle groups, such as an arm or leg, to maximize the potential of their forms for whatever circumstances they are in.  Elders are often the inspiration of the folklore half wolf half man monstrosities.

Thrope

A Thrope is a genetically distant werewolf.  Someone who may have once had the Gift in their ancestry, but it has slowly become a non-dominant gene.  They are very hairy humans, and their strength, speed, and reflexes are superior to a normal human, but they are not as kinesthetically gifted as a true werewolf.

Lycan

A Lycan is the other side of the genetic drift for a werewolf, a wolf that has distant ancestry.  Lycans are extremely intelligent wolves, who are often capable of understanding many human languages.

The Ranks

There are five ranks in the werewolf packs as well.  Not every pack has either a Shaman or a Loremaster.

Youngling

Younglings are often Pups or Wolfs, but mainly are ranked based on how long they have been using the gift.  Someone who is still learning what it is to be a part of the pack is a youngling, and will be protected by the pack if they find themselves in combat.

Beta

A Beta is often a Wolf or a Shifter, sometimes also an elder.   A beta is a mature wolf, who understands both the concepts of Pack and of The Gift, but is not the Alpha, or leader, of the pack.

Alpha

The Alpha of a pack is the leader.  Unlike wolves and dogs, the Alpha is usually chosen, and chosen based on experience, wisdom, and knowledge, rather than on combat abilities.  Occasionally you will find a young alpha, but most are older.

Shaman

Not one in a hundred of the Werewolves is capable of becoming a Shaman.  It is such an intense discipline; combining a total mastery over The Call with a Vampiresque training to focus the mind.  A shaman can shift singular muscles and body parts rapidly between shapes, while also being capable of a purely mental assault on an opponent.  When physically fighting Shaman’s appear to almost blur, as they rapidly shift body parts to maximize each muscle during the struggle, gaining an edge by using the form better suited for that part of their body.

Loremaster

Any wolf can become a Loremaster, though few get the urge to pursue this arduous training.  A loremaster is a historian, who learns the same focus of mind that a Shaman does, enabling them to battle on the purely mental level.
